Waverly came up with the big plays, on both sides of the ball, when it needed them the most on Friday night.

As a result, the Wolverines remained undefeated on the season with a 22-14 football victory over Owego in a Section 4 Conference Division IV game at Waverly.

Waverly scored three second-half touchdowns to erase a 14-3 halftime deficit and improve to 3-0 on the season.

"We held them at the end, and we had some guys make some awfully big plays at the key points," Waverly coach Jason Miller said.

No one made bigger plays than sophomore Kevin Gorman.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Gorman ran for a 48-yard touchdown to give Waverly a 15-14 lead. Four minutes later, Gorman returned a Dan Brainard interception 82 yards for an insurance touchdown. Gorman also made 12 tackles.

Owego (0-3) took the lead on the second play of the game, with Ethan Farabaugh hitting Harley Edwards on a half-back option play for a 32-yard touchdown. Brainard's 34-yard scoring pass to Justin Bensley in the second quarter gave the Indians a 14-3 halftime lead.

Waverly scored on its first possession of the second half, with Mark Kuzma running 28 yards to make it 14-10.

"We got a little momentum back," Miller said.

Owego made one last drive, but Patrick Bowman picked off a Brainard pass with three minutes to go to seal the victory.

"Owego threatened a couple times, but we were able to make plays and stop them," Miller said. "We just played good defense the whole game."
